my first car was the above and omg it was a smooth drive - that was in 1972. I drive a Hyundai 110 at the moment and while it is nearly 10 years old, I have only done 22,000 miles.

But it is so bumpy, you feel every pebble, bump so much. What would be the equivalent today of the Hillman Avenger. Just curious,

Can't answer your 'equivalent' part JJ but the Avenger was a sturdy ride, or maybe we just didn't feel the bumps as much back then?

yes Mamy - I had many many cars (old) but it (Avenger) was the creme de creme.

Coil sprung suspension at the rear axle is likely why it drove comfortably.

I have bought and sold many cars but sadly only driven one or two on private land.

As a former owner my suggestion would be an asthmatic rescue donkey with a tendency to resist movement. :-)

i don't think we'd got as many pot holes and sleeping policemen in 1972 as we do now . . .

Compared to modern cars, cars of that era had lower-power engines, heavier bodies and softer suspension, making it unlikely you'll be able to buy something similar nowadays.

My parents owned a Avenger. One of many makes after their retirement. I drove them all and we all agreed what a pleasant car it was to drive. They lived near the sea,in Porthcawl, and although the car was garaged and washed regularly with fresh water and waxed it succumbed to rust quickly. They replaced it with a Mk1 V.W. Golf that was a mechanical nightmare and they always mourned the demise of the Hillman.

Ael - agree with potholes, sister complains she is on a rollercoaster when I pick her up, unbelievable.

Don't forget that with most cars, when you sell them, you are presented with a pair of retro-vision rose-tinted spectacles, so that every time you think back you remember what an absolutely wonderful car it was. This applies particularly to the first car you ever owned and the rose-tinting deepens with time.

it was my first car and when Mother got in - she said she felt like a queen, mind you I lived in a tiny little street which meant the Avenger was literally across 3-4 little houses.

Worse car for RUST was a brand new Mini Metro - incredible rust and also within just having it some days - bad boys broke the window and cos I had a mystery security lock on it - they couldn't get it to start -wrecked the steering wheel and they pushed it down the street and into an entry. Couldn't believe it - my first brand new car.

And to top it all I knew the culprits but could never prove it. The lads (then) have now died.

I hired an Avenger in '72 for a fortnight's holiday. Absolutely loved it.
In recent years I've looked for one at car rallies - I think they've all rusted away... :((
