I have brought my son a Peugeot diesel on a 58 plate and the car tax states its £30 a year how come? I have a little petrol Kia and I have to pay £155.00 a year.. How come surely his peugeot will be worse environmentally the mine - thanks and Happy Motoring
While modern diesel cars may emit more nitrous oxide than petrol cars do, they actually emit LESS carbon dioxide. So they're less responsible for global warming than petrol vehicles are. https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/emissions/is-diesel-actually-better-for-the-environment/
The first year duty on a new car varies from 0 to 2245 depending on emissions. Presumably to deter people from buying polluting cars in the first place.
BTW - electric isn't pollution free at the moment - just the pollution happens somewhere else!
Oil burners have their place but that place is not in a car IMHO.
Tax rates vary because of differing Governments tinkering. If you buy a car over 40K (and lets face it not much for less these days) you have to pay another £150 on top. (Its to catch the EV's obviously as its based on list price plus list price of extras).
