car has started acting up when started the engine either idles at 3000 revs and will not come down ,or idles at 1000 revs and when you try to pull away it just dies.It is then hard to start again and keeps dying.Oil looks emulsified in top of engine and plugs are very black sooty even though about 1 month old, also black smoke from exhaust, poss head gasket prob?

Sounds more like a carb, choke or fuel injection problem. It might just be running cold, faulty thermostat causing the emulsion. Is it losing coolant? Emulsion can block the engine ventilation pipes and get into the carb. Give it all a good clean out and check the fuel system.

Thanks for reply garage ive taken it to says its head gasket but i agree with you,i dont think car would act up this way if the head gasket was gone.Ive asked my brother whos a Toyota mechanic and he seems to think along same lines as you carb or sticking throttle problem and to rich a mixture. It dosent seem to be losing coolant ,ive taken your reply on board and will let you know the outcome thanks again for your assistance.
Does the engine management light come on at low revs then go off at high revs? There is a throttle management sensor-type thingy which could be causing your problem. Sorry about the use of technical terms but possibly an auto electrician is the one to ask for a proper diagnosis. Good luck.
