A quick google shows that there are an estimate 5 million odd vehicles on the UK roads without a valid MOT, around half a million with no tax, and 300,000 with no insurance. Plod has his work cut out catching this lot. The typical fine for not having a valid MOT is £100, it might be cheaper to risk the fine than make alternative arrangements (car hire, taxis etc).

What about other things - for example driving with only one number plate light working ?

it should be a hanging offence🤣

NJ, "If you are stopped by the police and found with illegal tyres, you could receive a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points per tyre."

"If you are stopped by the police and found with illegal tyres, you could receive a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points per tyre."

There is no possibility of that unless a court acted unlawfully, Corby. It is as clear as crystal. That statement by the Highways Agency is incorrect.

Since this thread was temporarily closed, I continued the debate (with some additional information) here:

That statement by tehHighways Agency is incorrect, Corbyis incorrect Corby, please see the continuation

Miffy now starts to lose the will to live. Please, eds or mods please close my postings down.I wish i hadnt asked now.

So did it pass or fail?

Question Author

Its next Friday netherfield,11th October. My query was about asking whether i could keep on driving till the MOT test.

Is the car parked off the road in the meantime?

Question Author

Err,no,TCL,i will continue to use it up to Friday. As Hymie said in BA,it will only be a £100 fine.I start early mornings,no buses from Banchory to Aberdeen at 3am.As Hymie said the cops arent interested in arresting us motorists as such.

If you post the make and model of your car, the old bill can set up a road block on the A93 to catch you.

Question Author

But i wont be posting the make or model of my car online,Hymie,or anywhere else. Why should i?

So I'll ask again, what was the MOT result?

Question Author

Hi,netherfield, unfortunately it failed(corroded brake pipes).Damn.Getting sorted and going back to test centre on Wednesday.Fingers crossed.

Question Author

Sorry for not posting earlier,my wee car passed its test yesterday. Thanks for all the replies. Not had the bills yet.Hopefully nothing excessive.:-(

Glad it's passed.

Now put a reminder on your online calendar, with a notification a month before it is due.  No excuses next year.

Question Author

Cheers,barry,will do.
