Fined for a car that isnt mine

I sold my car to a scrap dealer in October of last year. I didnt get his name as it was out of the Friday ad, and I just wanted it gone! I sent of my part of the V5 to the DVLA, and got a rebate for the outstanding tax disc. I have recently recieced a letter from the tax office demanding �40 for my car being untaxed!!! I spoke to the DVLA who hadnt changed there records because the new owners of the heap didnt send off their part. DVLA are SUPPOSEDLY writing to me now to confim that the car is no longer mine, but will I still have to pay the fine????? TY

If the vehicle was reported untaxed after you sold it and informed DVLA you are not liable.
Sounds like a clerical error from Swansea.

yeah, but when i rang DVLA they still had it registered under my name.. and didnt no that I had sold it

hiya i got the same letter and all i did was write a letter to dvla explain i took the car to the scrap yard give him the docs 4 vehicle and he said he would sort it out as he knew what to do.explain that the only thing you didwas scrap the car and therefore thought you did know wrong as it is an everyday thing to scrap a vehicle and cannot understand why you have recieved the letter. this is exactly what i did and recieved a letter 3 weeks later confirming the dvla no longer ha dme as named owner ,no further action to be taken. simple if you do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely you told them you no longer owned it in order to get a rebate on your tax disc. If so there is the proof you need.
If you told them?
