I have,just bought a second hand 1996 850 volvo estate, only 36000 miles, it is idlying at just over 1000 rpm, what should it be and is it a job I can do

I dont understand what the problem is. Most cars idle aroubnd 1000rpm

Volvos don't .And its not right.
It is very difficult when you are stationary,as you have to keep you for on the brake, to stop it racing forward.
Depends on the model - idle speed on most 850s is between 850-950 rpm. On most models this is controlled by the ECU so should not change too much. I take it from your 2nd message that this is an automatic - if so you are experiencing "creep" which is normal in an automatic
