Would have a guess that the belt is worn or the tming belt tensioner bearing is faulty.
Timing belts on these should be changed around every 40,000 miles - at 80,000 I would change the belt tensioner bearing as well.
Cost - to fit a new belt and tensioner - not much change out of 100.
Have had 4 corsa's and never had a problem like yours.

Just a thought - who told you the timing was out of sync ?
If in doubt get a trustworthy mechanic to have a look.
Another thing - if you have to get the belt done put a new thermostat in the cooling system at the same time - they can be a pig when they stick closed and car overheats - have had to get 2 out of 4 changed.
