My car is making the most awful sound when I apply my breaks, like metal rubbing on metal. I think it may be my brake pads have worn out but it only had its M.O.T a month ago and i thought they would have spotted it then. Does anyone have any ideas?

The MoT would only check the effeciency of the brakes but they should have advised if the pads were worn. It sounds like you need new pads and possibly new discs. Get it to a garage asap.

Thank you, I have made an appointment with the garage. I just wanted someone else to tell me what they thought so i at least look as if i know what i'm talking about when the car goes in.
make sure that you don't get ripped off by garage trying to make the job bigger.ask for any items replaced to be put in a box in the boot of your car. i had a transit that went into a ford garage and they changed the discs as well as the brake pads but wouldn't give me the old discs (15000miles) said they had thrown them.25 pads 140 discs!
don't drive the car anymore untill pads are fitted 'cos the brakes will be VERY inefficient and the discs will get damaged more possibly resulting in complete failure of braking system.
