My girlfriend's son has just passed his test, hooray! In an automatic, can anyone point me at a list of small to medium cars that have an automatic derivative (with insurance groups)? I've done a bit of searching but but really it's a bit hit and miss!

It all depends on the age and price range you are looking for. Here are a few examples (remeber you are most likey to get better relaibility from german, japanese cars - generally)

1.Ford Escort 1.3 (IG 4) P - S reg from 800
2 Mitusbishi Colt 1.3 (IG 5) T - X reg from 1500
Peugeot 206 1.1 (IG 2-3) S reg from 2200
VW Golf 1.4L (IG 6-8) P - R reg from 1000

Your Ford's and Vauxhalls are cheap to run, insure and parts will be alot cheaper so baret his in mind.
My wife has an auto licence and over the years her list of cars with full auto boxes is:-
Daf 33
Cortina auto
BL Mini auto
Fiat Uno auto
Fiat Panda auto
and today a Nissan Micra auto.

She has also driven all my cars (family) which have been everything from Alfa Romeo 3 litre auto to current Mondeo TDci auto.

The market is vast.
All good answers.
I have a 1.6 Vauxhall Astra estate automatic that's only group 4 insurance. It suits me fine but fuel consumption of only 35 mpg will be a big consideration when it comes to replacement.
