My car has broken down and i have been told it is the crank shaft, does anybody know how much this will cost and what it is exactlt

Pretty much the backbone of your engine. It's a large 'shaft' to which your pistons are connected and which transmits the 'drive' or energy created. Replacement or repair would be a big job.
