Number Plates

Hi, we have a personalised number plate 'M3 NLC' our friend thinks we should sell the plate separately to the car as he thinks it might be worth more that way, how do I find out what value a number plate has? And then where would you sell it? Thanks.

I'd add the value onto the car - it's on an BMW M3 right ?

If you sell the car with that plate - I'd pay that bit extra for an M3 plate. If not and your valuation is a lot higher, then you have to put it on retention and sell the plate on and/or find another plate to re-register the BMW. Does the NLC stand for any intials ?

Well it's actually on a 328i so theoretically adds no particular value to the car, its the initials of the previous owner although 2 of the 3 are my boyfriends initials so its kind of ok. Thanks for your help. I don't suppose anyone would know an approx asking price for the car? 95 reg, leather interior, metallic paint, electric roof, been chipped so actually a 3.2 not 2.8.

Is there an error at the DVLA website when it indicates that this vehicle has not been taxed (nor declared SORN) within the past 6 years?

It has been taxed in the past six years, not for a year though, my partner lost his license and also the car is no longer used, my car is easier to bomb around in. Why do you ask?

If the car is not taxed it MUST be declared SORN else you are liable for a fine of �80 (reduced to �40 if paid within 28 days) and possible further penalties...

To be honest kempie, I have no idea if its declared SORN, I know its not taxed, but it's my boyfriends car.

the value of a numberplate is strictly related to demand. Does anyone want to buy M3 NLC? Possibly someone with an M3 or whose initials are NLC. If you could find someone whose initials are NLC AND owns an M3 you will get a good price, but this is near impossible.

If you think it is worth keeping and you want to sell the car right now, you will need to pay DVLA �105 to retain the plate off the car (�25) and pre-pay for its transfer onto the next vehicle (�80).

You can sell privately (ebay, newspaper, etc) or through a company who will advertise on the internet/newspapers and take a cut.

If you sell privately you should specify whether or not you are including the �80 pre-paid transfer fee in the price.

Have a look on ebay or in the national press, and websites, to see what you think it is worth.

Pearkers can give you an approx price for your car or pay Glasses guide �2.50 for a very accurate price that takes mileage and any extras into consideration.

Having it chipped in my eyes wouldnt add any particular value onto a car of that age - it leans itself towards being a little bit more of a niche market as only certain people would go for a car that's been chipped and narrows your search for a buyer down. If the car is a 2.8 then thats what it is - you will have the details of what the BHP has risen by having it chipped - but dont advertise as a 3.2 unless it has a 3.2 engine.
