when i hit 60mph in my focus there is a knocking sound coming from the rear any suggestions as to what this could be

It could be a badly balanced rear wheel. Try going at 60mph in 4th and 5th gear. If the knocking is still apparent it will probably rule out the engine or transmission. Check your exhaust pipe also. One of the rubber hangers may have snapped.
