Stereo playing up

The stereo in my escort is playing up. It is the orginal one that came with the car and the radio works fine but the cd player only works when it wants to. Any ideas of whats going on?

There is normally a sensor inside the player that detects cds being put in and switches the sterio over from radio to cd. If you take the unit out and have a look inside it maybe a dirty connection or a spring may have come off. Until you get it apart its hard to say exactly whats causing it. Good luck
