If the cambelt breaks whilst driving does it cause damage within the engine. i.e bend the valves etc.

With best regards

In a word, probably.

From Autodata:-
It is an interference engine in which the possibility of valve-piston damage is MOST LIKELY to occur in the event of timing belt failure
Rojam is correct.

Depending on how far you travelled when the incident occured. It most likely has done some serious damage and in that case not worth repairing.

Cambelt is really that last thing you want to go on a car!
If your VERY lucky and the belt breaks when the car is idling, the engine may survive, unfortunately, the belt most often breaks when under load i.e. driving at high revs.
The damage varies depending on the engine/design/compression ratio.... but diesels nearly always get badly damaged.
A very rough price for a new cam belt on an average car would be around 100 pounds, if it breaks, the damage cost can be 10 times this amount.
depending onthe speed at the time the belt snaps its tattybye to your engine .valves and a few pistons and maybe the engine block as well
