I have just bought a car (Peugeot 206 1.1LX with high mileage). I am asured that the cam belt has been renewed and have a receipt from the garage to this effect. However I am worried as when I am driving the car as soon as I take my foot off the throttle the car makes this strange roaring/wearing noise. It is not like the accelerator cable has got stuck and only happens when I reduce the power to the engine, I am not even applying my brakes. Please has anyone got any views on what it may be as this would be appreciated. Many thanks

It's always difficult diagnosing a ''sound'' when you can't hear it yourself.

I assume you can't hear the noise when the accelerator is pressed? Could this be because the accelerator is hiding the noise? Is the noise present if you blip the accelerator when stationary?

Hi thanks for replying to my question. No I don't think the engine noise is hiding it as the noise is quite loud and it goes as soon as I put my foot on the accelerator and comes back as soon as I come off it. I have tried it while its stationary and can hear it then. Thanks
If it only does it when the car is moving it may well be a worn drive shaft, they do have a tendancy to rumble when you take your foot off the accelerator, and can often sound worse if you lift off while turning a corner, although some peugeots do have a problem with noisy gearboxs' also.
Not sure what the newer Pug's are like, but the old one's were swines for eating driveshafts - I remember selling loads when I worked in the factors.
