Not issued with Insurance certificate.

I am picking up a new car tomorrow and changed Insurance companies.

They are not issuing a certificate of insurance and state I can print one off myself.

I know you can get tax off the internet nowadays, but do these home prints stand up with the Post Office if I buy tax the old way or get a producer from the police?

Also how long has this practice being going on?

My sister works for an insurance Co and she has said that emailed certs are usually fine as they print off ok and the PO cant tell the difference.

Not sure if one printed staright off a web page would be allowed though, it may be same as fax and not acceptable.

It just seems odd that although i chose the company solely on price, the cost to print a bone fide one off and send it to me would cost, say �2,25?????

As I have saved over �500 on cheapest quote it seems very odd.

According to the government, a self printed insurance policy is not acceptable:

The following documents are not acceptable:

* photocopies or faxes
* insurance certificates downloaded directly from the internet by the policy holder

And rightly so - anyone with a pdf editor could change the relevant details.

Thats what I thought.

I know the PNC now have insurance details so few bobbies will ask for them on a HORT1. But still!!!!!

I am insured with Budget and have just had my renewal quote through and it also states I can download my policy documents from their website. First time I have ever heard of this, they sent me one out last year. Why are they doing this if it is not worth the paper it is printed on?? How odd.

Perhaps it is just a new greener policy.

As said you can buy your tax disc off t'internet and the old bill know if you are insured nowadays.

But it's the principle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I couldn't get through to Swift Cover!!!!

I'm insured with Budget as well. I printed it in Dec so I could renew my car tax but it looked rubbish. When I asked, they did send me a proper document for free but said they normally charge �10. Daylight robbery!

Ethel's is the correct answer but a self printed one is good enough to tax your car withat a post office, also your insurance details or on the DVLA database so you could tax it online.

Altering the dates of expiry would not work now.

I've just renewed with ESure, and they gave me documents to print myself, but also sent one in the post. That's never happened to me before, but at least I had a copy I could print off if I needed to, whilst waiting for the originals.

Bewlay - you saved �500 !? I'd hate to think how much you were paying with your previous insurer !

I had no problems taxing my wife's car using a SwiftCover schedule document printed from the website, so I am sure you will have no problems.
