Starting driving

Hi

I recently started driving lessons and have been told to start looking for a car. I have 6,000 to spend. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what car they would get or recommend? I'm 17 so i'd have to be able to get insured on it and I'm a male so something a male would drive? Thanks

I would look for a �4k car and leave the rest for insurance (and tax and MOT). If you get something quick the insurance would be huge for a 17 year.

Insurance is going to be frighteningly high whatever car you buy until you are 22 at least.

Be sensible with your money - buy a used car with a low cc and forget about 'cool' for now.

This isn�t what you want to hear, but I go with Ethel on this. Any wheels are better than none, and you�d save a bomb by buying a used Fiesta for a grand or less. Very reliable, cheap to run, cheap to fix, cheap to insure and tax.

In a few years you can get something more interesting, with luck!

I agree with above. Get a small engined inexpensive car. Most new drivers have some type of accident in the first 16monhs, may just be a bump. get some experience before getting a new car and gain some no claim years

although if you have 6k to spend on a first car, you cant be short of a bob or two....i would suggest a 1.6 golf, 7 - 8 years old.....golfs go on forever...lol

for your first car I wouldn't spend any more than about �1k on a small hatchback with a small engine

go much more than that and you will be paying more insurance than the car cost you

At 18 (17 years ago) I had an opel manta gte (ask your dad) and was paying about 2000 a year insurance.

Also not to be too negative, but there is a fairly high chance that your first car will at very least be bumped at worst crashed, get a couple years experiance under your belt before buying anything too expensive. the old saying is you pass your driving test then start learning to drive.

Well, I go with all the other friendly ABers here, if you spend all your cash on a car then you will have nothing for insurance. At your age (no offence) �2,000 for some performance cars is not unlikely at all. So go for something cheap, like a Ford Fiesta, but with the price of fuel at at its' current obscene level, I would look first for economy. Heard that Citroen C1s are good on fuel, and so are Skoda Felecias, or you will need at least another �6,000 for fuel.

Ethel, I don't think any male would want to drive a pink car, and I have seen a few of them of them around.
