Could Fuel Tank Crack When Fitting New Sender?

The sender needs replacing in my fuel tank, but because the part has never been changed in 25 years (age of vehicle), I've been told the tank may crack during the process.
Would that mean a new tank, or could it be 'patched up'?

Wouldnt of thought so but on a vehicle of this age anything could seize up , is it a plastic or metal tank ?
There should be a rubber seal where the sender is fitted this should be replaced, out of interest what vehicle is it ?

1984 Range Rover, petrol, 3.5 ltr, steel tank

i assume you have to drop the tank ? thsi is usually where things seize up, tank straps bolts etc.

According to 'Haynes', the tank has to be removed.
