�2000 for old cars

Can someone give me more info on this please? On the news they said if you car is over 10 years old the Government will give you �1000 for it and the manufacturer will do the same. Seems too good to be true. What is the catch ? And do we have to buy a new car with the money ?? Thanks all.

as far as i can tell its a �2000 discount off a brand new car.

i cant see it working, how many people have 10 year old cars and then want to buy new? And why buy new when the depreciation is usually hefty if you do (thus probably wiping out any "discount" you had)

i think its to encourage people to buy new and get the car industry moving again.

I intended buying a new car anyway. My car is nearly three years old, and I can sell it privately.
Before I sell it, I could buy an old banger for next to nothing then trade it in for a new car.

the chances are if someone is driving around in a 10 year old car even after the �2,000 i doubt they will be able to afford or run a new one.
A majority of new cars are sold to customers part exchanging 3-5 year old cars in line with finance deals which doesnt quite fit in with 10 year old cars

yes, you could do that Ethel.
But there is always the chance that with the right discussions you could get �2000 knocked off the price of a brand new car anyway. The dealer will at least knock off thier �1000 as they dont have to dispose of old car.

am i the only one who thinks that car prices will increase by at least �1000 anyway?

The cars I buy are less than 8k new - a 2k discount is a huge amount in comparison.

I believe you scrap your car and get a voucher for �1000. You present this to the vendor of the new car who matches the voucher with a discount - which is supposed to be in addition to other offers already available.
It may attract people who own 'quality' cars' and run them into the ground before changing.

You don't get a voucher, sandmaster - you just trade your car in as usual and get 2k off. The dealer gets 1k when he scraps the car.

But you're right - you have to be the RK for at least a year, and the scheme ends next March. :(

Ford raised some models by �1000. Ka only about �250.
Don't bank on �2000 off cheaper cars - the manufacturers are yet to agree this and are more likely to only chip in up to 500 on smaller cars - remember this money is on top of existing discounts offered to buyers without a 10 yr old car .(they have owned for a year which has valid MOT.)
If the government suceed in persuading you to buy then they will recieve the VAT on the new car of 15%. On average this amount will more than cover their original outlay!

Haven't read all the above so may be repeating some of your responses but here goes:

-You must have owned the car for more than 1Year
-You must scrap the old car (must be more than 10yrs old) to qualify for the �2000
-the �2000 must go towards a new car
-The �2000 is and UP TO amount, not everyone will get the full allowance
-This offer is only valid between May 09 and March 2010

This is being offered because:
-new cars are more energy efficient and environmentally friendly, so govt wants old cars scrapped to get them off the streets
-Car industy is flagging, lots of cars and no one is buying. This will kick start the industry again.

Apologies if i have repeated any above comments, but the above is to the best of my knowledge (and also could be wrong, but I think that about the gist of it)

The environmentally friendly argument doesn't wash with me.
I bet producing a new car and scrapping an old car uses far more energy and materials, and creates more gases, than keeping a sound old car on the road.

I have a Ford Sorpio Ultima in excellent condition with all the luxurys one needs, and it only let me down once in 11years when a nut came of the brake linkage. It`s only worth about �450 in part exchange plus �1000 from the government. They must be joking. It`ll go on for a long time yet....thankyou very much.......as Paul O grady would say.

My main concern is that people will start scrapping cars which are perfectly alright, and we will lose a selection of some pretty damn awesome cars.

I can see why the Govt thinks this will work, Germany have done something similar and seen one of the best increases in their automotive market in 17 years, but I just hope we dont lose some classic cars because people can't be bothered to keep them....
