If you're not using a hands free mobile and you're driving that ties up a hand.
If you're driving a manual car that's obviously dangerous.
The law should really be for manual cars but I guess that'd be too hard to enforce.
If the business about it being dangerous holding a conversation was justifiable then there would be no reason to permit hands free phones would there?
There is the issue about dialing whilst driving but again that would be specific.
Not easy to frame an effective law that stops numpties doing dangerous things but still allows people to use phones but the one we have is pretty close.
There's an easy answer as noted above. If you want to use your phone in a car get a hands free kit, given the small fortune many people seem to spend on having the latest phone that doesn't seem a big ask

If we carry on like this, it will soon be illegal to breath whilst driving........or have the kids in the car.
Tell me this, how is that the police, traffic "officers", ambulance drivers, the fire brigade and coastguard are all allowed to use thier radios whilst driving?
I know they have been trained and are constantly monitored but then again, so are a lot of other people but they are not allowed to do it.
If its being engrossed in conversation thats the problem; how come hands free is okay, or talking to your passengers for that matter.
I agree with the ban on using a phone whilst driving but it should be for all of us.

I hate people who use their mobiles whilst driving, they dont concentrate on the road because they are too busy taking the call and trying to conceal the fact from the police.
This law at present hasnt prevented motorists from using their phones every day at least one motorist in five will be using theirs illegally.
If the changed the law to second offence wil mean a one year driving ban then people might start obeying the rules.

Why are police officers and ambulance drivers allowed to use radios?
Balancing risk against public good.
Their need is greater than yours to tallk to your auntie Flo.
That need outweighs the risk
Now you might ask why radios for cabbies and the like are not coverred - that is a better question and I would say an oversight
