Stuttering engine.

My car starts and idles fine. If I push the accelerator down slowly and smoothly the engine revs increase as normal. If I push the accelerator down more quickly and repeatedly, the engine stutters, a kind of `airy` sound like it might stall. There is plenty of petrol in the car. Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks.

could be the air filter, could be the timing is out, could be the cam timing is out

Being a car that old it will have a carburettor not fuel injection. You will need to strip down the carb and clean out the blockage from the accelerator pump. If you remove the air cleaner from the carb intake you will see the accelerator spray tube in the top of the venturie. When you open the throttle quickley this should spray extra fuel into the top of the carb if it does not then you have a blockage or the pump unit has failed.
Nip down your local libary and borrow a workshop manual.

I don't think they will be finding a carburetor under that bonnet somehow.

Thanks for your replies. Itis definitely a 1.2 `i`.

I started it this morning and it was `juddery` and it took a while to get it going but then ran fine.

I just started it again and it was as if nothing was wrong?

if its got a fuel filter it could be partly blocked, check all the connections to the injectors one might be sucking in air also the air filter might need changing
