tigwg - I've never done that and I don't think I could, but I never cease to be amazed at the selfishness of some parkers - going across two spaces, parking in disabled bays etc. My old mum had some labels done " you have my parking bay, would you like my disability too" which she used to slap on the windscreen of offending cars.... I have to confess though that I don't look inside other people's cars so I would not have seen your baby seat, and loads of people (like my neighbours) have a seat for the grandchild which is only used once a week. I wouldn't consider that seeing a seat automatically means that a baby is in the shop. But I do share your frustration, I am not as nimble as I was and squeezing into a tiny space of open door, because the next person hasn't left space, is really irritating.
