We're hoping to fly to Carcasonne in France next summer and hire a car when we get there. I am 65 and my husband will be 70 . Someone has told us that rental companies will not hire cars out to those over 70. Does this mean that I will have to hire and drive the car all the time of our holiday ?
I'm afraid the advice you were given i s correct in sofaras MOST hire firms (Hertz Avis,Eurocar etc) will not consider a 70 year old. You could try going on line to ask firms actually in France - there may be smaller local firms happy to do so.
I've certainly seen French men of over 70 driving hired vahicles.
How long are you going for.........I used to go for quite long periods of time, so I used to take my car by Motorail from Calais to Narbonne, and book a sleeper on the train. You can take more luggage and obviously pay no car hire charges.
why don't you try asking avis or hertz, they rent cars in france so should know. A friend of mine could not hire a car in Italy because he was too old (over 75). If you decide to use the ferry, I recommend overnight from portsmouth to Caen. It is a very easy run down via Poitiers and Bordeaux on the autoroutes and can be done easily in a day
