Any reccomendations;
Needs to be good for 15,000 - 20,000 miles per year, mostly motorway
Insurance group - No more than Group 10/11
Performance - not crucial but would like a bit of go in it. Push comes to shove would take economy over performance
Sporty saloon if possible. Room for luggage and/or golf clubs.

I am drawn to german made, but would welcome suggestions, thanks.

This car is for my brother, he has just text me the criteria and asked for opinion.
I suggested 2nd hand BMW 3 Series, Audi A3/A4 or Merc C Class as I have driven german cars for a few years and no complaints, was looking for sensible suggestions.
Dont see Smart Car as suitable for the motorway miles and suitcases and golf clubs (at the same time) but thanks anyway!
Sorry jd.....the new SmartCars are fine for motorway driving, but as you rightly say it would be a matter of luggage or golf clubs (I didn't see the 'and')
I like a passat, stellar car, very underrated
smart cars are great on the motorway. My husband is six foot two and is very comfy in mune. However, you are right re luggage and golfclubs. What about an A class?

Is it true smart cars can do 1,000km per tank - if true then very efficient and from an economy point of view would be fine. No offence to any Smartcar owners, but he is 27 and a bit of a lads lad, cant see him going down that route.
hmm, they are a bit girly :) not sure how many miles i get out of a tank, sorry
audi a4, hold the value when you come to resell. big boots and can get a 2.0 tdi which in my a3 does 55mpg round town and have had 72mpg on the motorway, (a4 should roughly do same) and is quiet quick too being 140bhp. not sure what insurance group they are but my a3 is about 12 i think and is cheap enough to insure. in 3 years of owning my a3 all i've done is changed a few bulbs....
Used Skoda Octavia Turbodiesel - German engineering, not sure of insurance group.

Mazda 6?

I was always astonished the amount I could fit in my old Mercedes A Class. Perhaps the Smart's are also deceiving?

Thanks again for your input guys... :)
