Rolf Harris is under my bonnet...

I have a strange noise under my bonnet - it is intermittent, doesn't happen with any particular action such as accelerating or decelerating. I would describe it as a whirring vibration sound... my daughter, who has wonderful powers of description, said it sounded like Rolf Harris doing that strange noise he does, or his didgeridoo....

Any ideas? It has only started happening with this cold snap and I am sure it is coming from under the bonnet as opposed to within the dashboard somewhere.
Thanks.
(This is a serious question despite Rolf references....)

Could be a cat trapped in the bonnet.

Ha Ha..... If I wanted wisecracks, I'd have put this in chatterbank....... ;-)

(Maybe I ought to - I could do with cheering up, and if the quality of replies is as yours...... !)

p.s..... if it were a cat, I wouldn't be so pee'd off....... ;-)
Only semi-joking. It happened to me once. They crawl under the car to get the warmth of the engine and then find they can't get out again. I don't know who got the bigger shock, me or the cat.
could be a kangaroo tho
Have you checked your anti-freeze?

If it were a cat, and it had been there now for over a week - it would be very well roasted.....
a bit of grit in the fan belt?

or a very angry koala
Question Author
Wouldn't grit make more of a.... gritty sound. A grinding or rough sound?

This is a purring vibration.....
You will be all right as long as you haven't got bats in the belfry. Sorry, couldn't resist it.
could be a fan belt slipping.. what sort of car you got? if you have a 4 wheel drive you may be loosing traction in a wheel or something like that..

It's a peugeot 307, 1600 petrol, I think.
I have one of those and I don't get that noise, I get lots and lots of unexplained rattles and pings and twangs, but not Rolf, it does sound like a fan belt issue though, it will probably go away soon, all the noises I get do eventually just by being ignored. : )
actually I may have a 306, never sure, only had it 4 years. : (

Sage advice Dotty..... my policy with cars is usually - ignore it long enough and hopefully it will go away! thanks x
My advice was going to be....turn the radio up :-)
Question Author
It was quite funny really, our long snowy treacherous journey home - we turned the radio off completely so I could hear this damn noise and for 5 miles we did Rolf Harris impressions.... we must have looked like a couple of mad women.

No mechanics out there?
have you actually looked under the bonnet to see if theres anything under there?or looked under the car to see if anythings dangling under it?
Question Author
Errr.... no Sammo, I haven't. I'm just a girl......... ;-)

Maybe that would be a good idea. I shall look this evening to see if there is anything obvious - such as a roasted cat, koala, didgeridoo or something as simple as a leaf....
Sammo. She'll probably look under her hat.LOL
