I'm going to send off for my provisional licence soon (i've heard they take ages to get back to you) and use some (hopefully not most) of the saving in my account to pay for lessons and the test, seeing as dad won't put me on the insurance for the jag.

For those of you that only had lessons with a proper instructor in their car, how much did you spend in total? (I know this'll vary a lot)

And how much are the tests, or does it vary from company to company?

My son passed a couple of months back

His instructor was charging £25 an hour he was getting a lesson a week for about 6 months.

He had a few retakes on the hazard awareness test apparently it's quite sensitive to you calling out hazards too early.

He passed his practical test first time.

i believe now that part of your test is having to take the examiner to a place without him telling you how to get there. good job that wasnt on mine because i would have failed !

Gina good job the test route goes up my road (to do the 3 point turn). Unless they change the route. I often see/watch learner drivers doing it, most of which hit the kerb, then hit their head on the steeringwheel in dispair.

molly, its not the test route that they send you on to get there yourself its a different place altogether. and its no longer a 3point turn, its called a turn in the road as you can do it in more than 3 turns now, obviously making it easier for some

as far as i have heard from driving instructors, the average would be about 24 lessons... which is what i ended up having, although im sure they do squeeze perhaps 1 or 2 extra out of you... it all depends on how confidant/aware/adaptive you are to things. no one driver is the same, but if i were you, id set aside enough to cover 24 lessons, aim for at most 20 (providing you are not driving outside of lessons with an instructor) and if at that or less lesosns you pass, then spend the left over on celebrating!

i paid £18 for my lessons, this was about 8 years ago now. prices at the moment seem to average about 20-25. there are special deals which can get you cheaper lessons... but most special deals will have some sort of requirements that end up in you staying with them and paying through the nose for the rest of the lessons, or paying up to again, average cost of every other instructor...

dont be tempted to get a cheap deal then change instructor then get another cheap deal then get another instructor...

i had an instructor for several lessons but didnt feel i was getting anywhere and failed twice and didnt really look forward to my lessons, i then changed instructors and it felt completely different and got so much further and then passed with him

Go for a female instructor molly............I had to change instructors after the first one tried it on.

Best of luck molly, I can't remember how much my lessons were as they were in the dark ages ... and get plenty of practice in between lessons if you can. You seem such a nice girl, your parents are lucky to have you.

I had 18 lessons at £12.50 per lesson (in 2001)
I took 6 years of careful driving and no claims before I could convinve my dad put me on the insurance for his Mercedes SL! My test was £60ish I think.

Think I had about 20 lessons which were £24 each.

I failed my test because the examiner was being examined by a guy sat in the back of the car. He failed me for observation when I was doing a bay park and I only got 3 minors other than that. I was quite peed off about it as my instructor said the examiner would probably have just given me a minor otherwise and as it was the very first thing I did in the test, it meant I had failed before I even left the test centre. I may aswell not have done the rest of the test.

Oddly, my 3rd test (second failed for touching a kerb while parking) was the worst but I passed.

I hit the kerb in my test and still passed ! Kept control of the car and didnt panic although I thought I was going to fail
