Speed Camera

Are the Cameras that they put behind unmarked police cars on tripods speed cameras or do they look at number plates and check tax? The camera unit is about the side of a 1 litre paint can on a tripod. Im asking because on friday i was doing 90mph past one but it was on the other side of the dual carageway facing on-coming traffic. im pretty sure the barrier would of blocked its view of the rear of my car? please advise. thanks in advance!

If it was a single box next to an unmarked car then it sounds like they were manning a portable speed trap. If they were after you they would have got you.
They can't prosecute you on the other side of the road with a portable speed trap as it has to be measured across fixed distances and for a foxed duration.
Tax dodger seeking units are usually manned by the DVLA and not the police and are also emblazened with DVLA logos.

I went past one of those last year and could actually make out the contented smile on the policemans face. About a week or so later I received a speeding ticket.
However, it was on the same side of the carriageway as me facing the oncoming traffic so you should be alright - they can't take your picture if the camera's not pointing at you

The new speed laser cameras are more sophisticated than all of you - it can measure your speed take a photo of you & your car then you get a fine in the post - on both sides of the road. Devious little devices but if you speed what on earth do you have to complain about? Slow down in future and you won't get done.
