I have my wrist/arm in plaster cast - I can drive fairly well left handed on my automatic car - but will this void my insurance or get me in trouble with the police

Contact your insurance company and ask them. If you don't and you subsequently need to make a claim, they will welcome the opportunity to wriggle out of paying. If you have already cleared it with them, they will have no such opportunity.
your best bet is to see your doctor and get a letter from him.and then notify you ins co
I don't think "fairly well" will go down well with the insurance companies or the police if you have a bump.
