If you go to:-

http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/ index.jsp

Just select �Vehicle Enquiry�, then �Next� and enter your registration number and vehicle make & it will tell you how much it will be.

Yes you can tax the car in advance, you should've received a letter from the DVLA which shows when your tax expires and this will enable the post office to issue it up until October 2007.
