Give Up The Car? Brits Say No But Are Driving Less

16:37 Mon 24th May 2010 |

The British motorists' response to the economic slowdown is that they are now more likely to reduce the number of miles they cover a year rather than change vehicle to a less polluting one, a recent poll by Bewiser.co.uk concludes.

29% of British motorists are currently cutting down on the amount they travel every month to save on their petrol or diesel bills against last year.

The government’s stated aim of raising fuel duties was to encourage drivers to switch out of their large gas-guzzling vehicles and step into smaller and more pocket friendly cars. Yet, only 6% of motorists have actually changed their vehicle towards more fuel efficient and economical ones.

Even with the scrappage scheme extended to include another 100,000 cars and vans the government is struggling to approach its EU target of cutting CO2 emissions by 34% by 2020.

So is the Government failing? Well the answer is strangely no! A third of Britons now stay in more and are keeping their older much loved cars in the garage which saves money and also reduces motorists carbon footprints.

So much for Government planning. Maybe next time the answer is putting on more interesting content on the “Telly” or even on the Net?
