When I was at school some 50 years ago I remember singing a carol to the tune of "the Ash Grove"

The words went something likthis :-

The night came so slowly
It came silently and holy
??????????????????????
When Jesus was born.

I have tried for years to identify this carol and to find out the rest of the words but to no avail.

Can anyone help to solve this mystery for me please?

If you google 'ash grove' it tells you some of the carols and hymns the tune has been used for including one called:- The Master hath cometh.

I can't put the link but the one I sang at school was by Benjamin Britten. Google it and the YouTube version comes up.
