Was shouting at my car radio this morning - Richard (if i had a personality I'd still be this boring!) Allinson was blethering on about snow, so he played Skiiing in The Snow - a northern classic.
Did he play the appropriate fave stomper by The Invitations? No, he played the snivelling copycat crud that is a 'version' by Wigan's Ovation, which sadly was the chart hit.
The original version's fame was based on one lone copy which was found in an American Woolworth's remainder bin by a collector buying razor blades while waiting for his trip home. The single was driven from club to club, such was it's demand, especially at The Torch (northern legendary club and about two miles from where I sit writing), but tragically it was destroyed in a fatal car accident.
True northern fans spurn the Wigan's Ovation version, and remain true to the underground sound of the original.
