I am looking to buy a basic guitar for my fiance, who has always harboured a passion for learning to play one. Do any ABers have any advice? I also want to buy a good 'teach yoursel the basics' book.  I taught myself the piano using this sort of book and thoroughly enjoyed it!

If its accoustic basics you are after - the The Frederic Noad Book is ideal. I used to use that when I taught classical to teenagers, but it gives you the right start to learning the guitar.

Guitar for Dummies!  Honestly, I can't recommend it enough!  They'll be playing the A-D-E sequence in minutes.  It's so easy to understand and you don't need ANY music knowledge.  You also get a CD with it.

Fantastic, thank you. Any advice on the actual guitar?  I want an acoustic one.

Hello Kilala my advice would be find a reputable guitar centre or music shop explain  what you want and I'm sure they would advise you. You dont have to pay a  great deal for a first guitar but I found an original Spanish made one best. But it is personal choice. I bought mine in the 1970's for 120 so probably it would be about 350 today. But you can spend thousands of course but that's not necessary for a first guitar. Good Luck!!
