Watching some old footage of 'Top Of The Pops' (60's & 70's) last night, I was surprised to see Elton John miming piano playing with T Rex (Get it On).
I wondered if he was on the actual recording of that disc ?

You mean this one? He was probably in the studio doing one of his own tracks so decided to step in, still trying to raise his profile in the early 70s

No he didn't, Blue Weaver and Rick Wakeman are credited with the piano parts, no-one is sure who played what piece on the final mix.

In a similar vein, John mimed the mandolin part on Maggie May, actually played by Alan Hull from Lindisfarne if memory serves.

Peel was a friend and champion of the band, but I don't think he could actually play a mandolin.
