This is a long shot but...I was in a shop yesterday and heard a familiar song. My phone had died so I couldn't shazam it. I thought it was Sinead O'Connor but I don't think it is. It's a female singer from 80's or 90's and she was singing something like "varshardian" or "sharshardian" and the song was quite slow and gentle. Any ideas please?

any other lyrics you remember?

Unlikely. Not at all well known
But she does seem to sing SHADAVARIAN which is an anagram of what you said
SHADAVARIAN

is spelt...... oro se do bheatha bhaile
isnt it ?

seems a good field for Mondegreens
' and so you can gas them' at 1.57

Now if you hadn't mentioned Sinead O'Connor I would have suggested this which is more well known and from the right era and where the lyrics do sound like "shashardian" (or at least shashardia):

Hush hush, eye to eye
Too shy shy
Hush hush, eye to eye
Too shy shy
Hush hush, eye to eye
Too shy shy
Hush hush
Hi PP- I'm not sure quite sure what you are saying there (and i usually can decode it) - I think you are saying there's plenty of scope for misheard lyrics in that Sinead O'Connor track. It sounds to me as if it's one those records being played backwatrds at times).
I'm not sure Kitty has returned but if you do come back Kitty can you tell us whether this long shot is the one? (not many shops would play this except perhaps in Irish Republic).

Thanks all but that isn't the one I was thinking of! No worries..
I also can't think of any other lyrics. It's like having a very faint memory of something familiar but you can't quite get there - so frustrating! If I think of any other clues, will let you know.
Thanks. for coming back.
It wasn't in Asda was it?
Next best guess then is a female coverversion of Kajagoogoo's "Too Shy" or Phil Collins' "Susudio"

Maybe it was someone else from Ireland like The Cranberries
sharshardian- could it have been shawerdi'orse,I'mdun (Ciao Adios I'm Done). Ann-Marie is more 2017 though than 80s/90s

Have a listen to Dreams by Cranberries (ends with some darddardians) and let me know if it's anything like that sort of sound

No it was in Jack Wills lol. Thanks fiction-factory, but I think I'll have to admit defeat on this one. The one time I wanted to use Shazam and my phone had died..never mind!
Okay. I know Jack Wills well -they tend not to play 1980s Sinead Oconnor stuff. It's more likely to be 2010+ indie soft rock stuff,
I'll have a think about some more recent stuff.
In fact try my first thought which I discounted as it's defintely not SInead Oconnor or similar- My Charlemaigne (check spelling) by Blossoms. Have a listen. It's the sort of think JW will play
Perhaps it is originally sung by Elvis Presley - 'Wooden Heart'

Ha- more likely than Wooden Heart I think. I hadn't heard that version of Chiquitita before. I suppose it depends how much Kitty nows about her music- anyone who knows 80s stuff probably knows the 70s Abba stuff too I'd have thought, but you never know
Bit of an outside choice but the lyrics could be heard as different things.
fiction-factory stated, "Ha- more likely than Wooden Heart I think. I hadn't heard that version of Chiquitita before. I suppose it depends how much Kitty nows about her music- anyone who knows 80s stuff probably knows the 70s Abba stuff too"

Surely, Abba song, 'Chiquitita' is very, very unlikely, as it is a well-known song!

However, the song 'Wooden Heart' actually mentioned "varshardian, varshardian" about over half-way in the song! Check it out.
I can't recall that bit but I may listen tomorrow (watching Athletics now)

Can't you see
I love you
Please don't break my heart in two
That's not hard to do
Cause I don't have a wooden heart
And if you say goodbye
Then I know that I would cry
Maybe I would die
Cause I don't have a wooden heart
There's no strings upon this love of mine
It was always you from the start
Treat me nice
Treat me good
Treat me like you really should
Cause I'm not made of wood
And I don't have a wooden heart

Muss i denn, muss i denn
Zum stadtele hinaus
Stadtele hinaus
Und du, mein schat, bleibst hier?

Muss i denn, muss i denn
Zum stadtele hinaus
Stadtele hinaus
Und du, mein schat, bleibst hier?

There's no strings upon this love of mine
It was always you from the start
Sei mir gut
Sei mir gut
Sei mir wie du wirklich sollst
Wie du wirklich sollst
Cause I don't have a wooden heart
Last stab for tonight. Cranberries again- Shattered
