I was pleased when Transport For London gave up its pointless persecution of street musicians in Underground stations, and offered regular monitored places for them to play.

Sadly, where I live in Stoke, the level of musicianship is not that high as a rule.

There are some really good ones around but there are also some who think that because they can play an instrument, that means they can sing as well. I saw this guy earlier this year He was an Australian backpacker who had been travelling around for a year and was about to head home.

I was visiting Coleraine, a university town in Northern Ireland a few years ago. There was a young student who played in the town square, she linked her laptop to a speaker system to play a full orchestra and she played an unusual street instrument, the cello, absolutely brilliantly. She attracted a large crowd and I was told made plenty of money.
