Basically, if it is not 75 years since the composer of the song died, it is still in copyright. You can check by contacting the Performing Rights Society - their local rep should be in your phone book.

Also, it's not just the composer you have to take into account - it's also the arranger and lyricist. So a work written in the 11th Century, but arranged by a living composer, would still be in copyright.
