It seems that often listening to some types of music that it would be vertually impossible for one drummer working alone to produce the percussion sounds that seem to be there. Is it common for bands to use more than one drummer at the same time - similar to lead and rythmn guitars ?

Orchestras, brass and wind bands frequently use two, three or more percussionists, according to what music's being played and what percussion instruments are written in.
Indian ensembles frequently use a range of drums, as do musical groups from other countries.
BUT ... especially in the rock world, some drummers are extremely talented and can sound like more than player, especially when they have (and can play properly) double and triple kits.
