This solves your argument one way or the other, J (Jerome) Geils is the guitarist in the band, the lead singer is Peter Wolf. Hope this sorts out the confusion, which often arises when bands are named after people other than their vocalist - Steve Winwood spent years being called 'Spencer' because he sang in the Spencer Davies Group.
