I think you're maybe thinking of the clog dance from 'La fille mal gardee'. I can't find the music on its own, and I know you don't especially want to watch the dance but here's a clip of the Bolshoi Ballet's performance:

Many moons ago I had the privilage to watch this opera (only one!!) I'm sure that the music is called the Clog Dance, anyway it was written by Peter Ludwig Hertel (1864)
so you could research this further. Hope this helps.
If it's this particular piece that story_teller's looking for, it is called Clog Dance, and it's from a ballet, not an opera. The original composer/arranger of the music (most of it consists of adapted French traditional tunes) is unknown. Hertel's adaptation of the music (it's had several incarnations over the years) was used by John Lanchbery to create the Clog Dance tune for Frederick Ashton's 1960 production of the ballet. It's Ashton's production that most of us are familiar with.
