There was a song in the 80's that had the line "I'm in love with a starship trooper" but I'm not sure if that's the title or who the artist was.

I'd go with peterswest on this one - The Passions.

The execrable 'Starship Trooper' was by Hot Gossip and featured future Mrs Lloyd-Webber (and then ex-Mrs. Lloyd--Webber), Sarah Brightman. Truly awful.
