Their debut album sold millions, and spawned five hit singles. Although the duo could sing, they sang nothing on their album - the vocals being handled by session singers. Rob Pilatus was obviously carried away into fantasy land by the success of 'their' album, telling interviewers that he was " ... better than Dylan, better than Jagger, I'm the new Elvis." The dream shattered when the scam was revealed, and the duo were forced to return their Grammys. They attempted to carry on as 'Rob and Fab' but quickly vanished into obscurity. Pilatus spiralled out of control with a combination of mental illness, drink and drugs, which ended in his suicide in 1998.
Not only did they have to hand back their awards but I seem to remember that anyone who had bought the album could also claim a refund. Don't know how many did though - I begged my sister to take it back but she said that she liked it anyway. One of the 2 also appeared live on Radio One soon after to prove that he could actually sing and sounded terrible. Shame about the suicide though, there are more deserving cases.
