we aren't, but they are, Syrian against Syrian, Egyptian against Egyptian and carry on down the line. And don't trot out the same line about our forces in these countries, this would and will happen even if we never existed, they can't agree on this own religion, what shape it should take, or it's sunni, or shia, or any faction that breaks away and joins the jihadists to become yet more terrorists on the world stage.
Undoubtedly the fundamentalist islamists are taking more and more territory. The last 10 years of killing in Iraq and Afghanistan have made not a bit of difference. Bush and Blair would have done well to read up on the Northwest frontier problems from C18 and C19, and how the Taliban regenerated as soon as they were left alone. They are still undefeated in a thousand years.

Now the West faces losing North Africa. Central Africa makes a natural divide, the tribes in equatorial Africa have their own agendas and the tribes to the south are probably not amenable to primeval fundamentalism. Basically N. Africa and much of Asia is up for grabs. China won't tolerate it, Burma and Indo-China neither. They have their own methods of dealing with aggressive islamists, which go back many hundreds of years. The West could do with studying what they do...

Meantime the fundamentalist Christians have taken over swathes of the American hinterland. Not quite as bad as it sounds, as mostly these are 'flyover' states and more influence is wielded by the coastal states.
