her parents are so upset but fail to realise they are the core cause of this.

I have read this thread and found it thought provoking.? I never looked at the way Gerry made his, almost flippant ,remarks, all I saw was the hurt of two people. We are all shocked and saddened, disillusioned and angry, for Maddie, and at the world. I still hold the belief she will be found safe and well, but I also hope no one else will ever put their children in the way of danger as they so obviously did. We wouldnt, but others do,as you say "only for a moment" but that moment is all it takes.

I have said this on previous posts about this subject but I will repeat it again.
1) In the 1980s every Butlins Camp had a system where if you were staying there you locked your child in the room at night and go and enjoy the entertainment. Butlins staff would walk around the camp and listen in at doors to see if they could hear a child crying. If they could then they would make an announcement and the parent would go back tot he room and see to the child. Pretty much every parent who went to a Butlins camp (and there were many thousands) used this service.
2) A lot of hotel rooms offer a baby minding service where you can leave your child in the room whilst you go down to the restaurant. This is not by any means uncommon and is hardly frowned upon.
3) If you have a large house and large garden, it would not be uncommon for you to have a BBQ and a few drinks with some friends whilst your kids were in the house (a few hundred yards away) with the back door open. This is not a dissimilar scenario.
Please try to remember that the majority of cases where children are sexually assaulted are by members of the family. Do people do any cheques when leaving them with family - or do they just use their own judgement?
Yes, Maddy's parents made a wrong judgement - there is no doubt of this - they are probably guilty of being too trusting.

The difference with the Butlins and hotel scenarios is that the doors were locked and we lived in a very different society then! These two left their three children in an apartment that was unlocked and in a foreign country. The restaurant was a fair way from the apartment and they could not see the apartment from the restaurant. The fact that they say they went to check on the children every half hour is neither here nor there. The fact is those children should never have been left alone, and for that reason alone, I cannot feel any sympathy for the parents.
