I think it was running down long before the shysters stepped in. 20 years ago, DH and I used to buy the majority of our work clothes there. We both had to wear smart casual, I needed trousers not skirts and we could both could find suitable stuff without spending a fortune. Then they went all yoof market and stopped selling decent basics so we moved over to shopping at Cotton Traders They used to be brilliant for lighting then the prices got out of hand so Ikea looked a better bet...its always a dangerous point where the real estate becomes worth more than the turnover.
Agree with Woofgang. The rot set in long before. They just didn't get with the times.
Not that being bled dry by owners etc helped much but it was going to happen sooner or later. The real shame is the workers pension pot being scavenged and wasted. That, for me is the real travesty. Business go out for many different reasons but to raid the pensions of your hard working employees is the kicker.
