My son in law decided to join the labour party earlier this year. In the any other information part of the form he wrote a bit of an anti Blair rant. He sent it electronically, along with £25-00.
Some days later he got an email saying he couldn't join. However, they've refused to give him back his £25-00, stating some clause in the small print. He's made several calls and numerous emails to try and get his cash back, but to no avail.
Anyway, 2 weeks ago he received through the post a book of Xmas raffle tickets...for the local Labour party. Three guesses what he did with them? :-)
I've had a quick look through the application process and among the terms and conditions it does say that in the event of an application being rejected no refund will be given.
I would suggest this constitutes an unfair condition and should be challenged. If I were so minded I might do so, but there is no way the Labour Party (or indeed any other political party) will get a penny from me :-)
I think it's a perfectly fair condition.
And if I was going to part with £25 of my money for anything I would make damn sure I was eligible for a refund, especially if I was going to rant and rave on the application form.
I'd imagine that that rider probably saved them the bother of sifting through similarly minded but more savvy applicants
Given the sensitivity in the Labour Party about 'entryism' by the hard left, putting an anti Blair rant on the application form is pretty dumb.
At least he knows the money had gone to a good cause tho :-)
