The Difference Between Being European And Being A Member Of The Eu?
49 Answers
I'm constantly amazed by the conflation of the idea of being in the EU and being European. Pro-EU people persistently and deliberately perpetuate the lie that being European equates to being in the EU. I've seen countless celebrities on TV and people in my everyday life make this monumentally idiotic mistake and perpetuate this falsehood. They think that by exiting the EU, the UK is somehow leaving Europe – the very continent that it is tectonically tied to. The mind boggles at these imbeciles. Thankfully, there are like-minded people out there in the world who are great at exposing this pernicious myth and enunciating far more eloquently than I ever could:

Sorry Jim, but you're wrong. I did no such thing.
In your eagerness to defend your beloved EU, you have misunderstood my initial statement and concocted a false narrative. A straw man argument if I'm not very much mistaken.
If you can be bothered to read what I actually wrote you will find I said that, in my opinion, people who equate the EU with Europe are imbeciles. In no way does that mean I am ridiculing those who disagree with me on the matter of whether we stay or leave the EU. If you can't see the difference between those who are stupid enough to falsely equate being in the EU with being on the continent of Europe then I can only lament your comprehension skills.

I don't know if you've watched the video linked in my initial post. I shall assume you have not for the purposes of this post.
In it, Guy Verhofstadt twice makes the claim that being in the EU is essentially the same thing as being a European. He falsely equates the two. What he is suggesting is that if you reject the EU, you are rejecting Europe. He constructs a completely false narrative.
Now, Verhofstadt is clearly an intelligent man. Of that there is little doubt. Therefore, I can only conclude that he is indulging in deliberate wicked chicanery. He knows that the EU does not equate to Europe. But he tries to tie the two together by suggesting that if you're anti-EU, you're anti European. This is a despicable lie and a despicable act. This man is sowing the seeds of hatred and division and doing it in a cardigan to appear all warm and cuddly to people who may not understand the difference.
This is the man who stands in the EU Parliament and rants and raves about how it's so inconvenient to his totalitarian plans that individual EU nation states won't just give up their sovereignty to the EU bureaucrats.
The man is terrifying. If you can't see the danger he poses to the peoples of Europe and the wider world then I can only pity your myopia.

Birdie; Verhofstadt is a Belgian, he may talk about a united Europe, but he doesn't even belong to a united country! They are Flemings and Walloons, (he's Flemish) two predominant cultural and linguistic groups of modern Belgium. The Flemings, who constitute more than half of the Belgian population, speak Dutch, or Belgian Dutch (also called Flemish by English-speakers), and live mainly in the north and west. The Walloons, who make up about one-third of the Belgian population, speak dialects of French and live chiefly in the south and east.
They don't exactly rub along together nicely, in fact, in the search for terrorists it came to light that there are (unofficially) 2 separate police forces even within the town of Brussels who hardly communicate with each other.
Nigel Farage has referred to it in the EU Parliament as a "non-country" - purposely to annoy him. :0)
