It doesn't stand up.

"You two "...
Thanks for your support Roy, I knew you would see sense in the end.
How can you make a comparison with Jimmy Savile, Andy. He was total evil and that totally wiped out the so called good. The good was used to mask the evil for his own devices. In my mind Boris has done good things as a PM. But he's acted stupidly and without thought over the party issues - certainly not evilly
er sozza what is the -so- rule?

a guess is: that it hides a howling non-sequitur - fr'instance

Andy is picking his nose in that particularly unedifying fashion so that means Boris' days are numbered....

Pray tell
My grandad was the co-founder of the Stoke Mandeville games. He volunteered at SM and he reported Savile, at least twice.
Jimmy Savile invited both myself and my sister, separately (14,16 roughly) to "go and see his office".
Our grandad had warned us, and so we both declined.

I realise the point is, that doing good, does not make up for anything else. And I do agree.
Pat - I am not making a comparison, neither is naomi, it is the logic of her argument that gives rise to my use of Savile to make my point.

If you are going to set up a judgement of behaviour, which naomi has, then it should stand up to testing.

That means that it can stand a comparison - even an unpleasant one.

And if it doesn't, and the Savile example shows that it doesn't, then Boris doesn't get let off.

That's the point I am making.

It has nothing to do with Johnson or Savile, it's about testing a position, and seeing if it stands up.

And in my view, it does not.

So let's not get emotional about the example I am using, that's not the point.

It's about being rational and fair in all cases, not simply allowing one because it fits, and not the other because of the circumstances.
"NO, he 's pretending someone in his family has tested for covid, so he is now showing us all the right thing to do, isolate"

So teapots, do you know that for a fact, or are you lying about it?
Lankeela. Teapots probably doesn't know that for a fact any more than all the other folk, including me, whose first thought was that.

The point is that the country needs to have a leader whose every word isn't beginning to be doubted by a huge number of people.
// someone in his family has tested for covid, so he is now showing us all the right thing to do, isolate //

Isn’t the right thing to do is take a LFT and if that is clear, go to work ?
Yes Gromit you are right, but its the only excuse he can find at the moment to lay low, and show us all what a good boy he is being :0) Just a bit better than the eye test excuse.
Andy, I disagree. Your example did not match. The two situations are entirely different. Sometimes good people make bad mistakes, that can be forgiven because basically they have done well.
Pat - The example is not meant to match - that is my entire point!

It's precisely because it doesn't match that Naomi's argument is flawed.
I agree with Andy. In fact I referred to Savile the other day (I can't remember which thread) as an example of good not balancing evil. I think we all agree that Savile was much more evil but it's just another case where balancing good and evil does not excuse the good deeds.
Bhg, I’ve not mentioned balancing good with evil. AH has his knickers as well as his brain in a knot again. Best ignored when that happens. Lottie (Pat) has it right.
"The evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones. W Shakespeare. In other words people's bad deeds have a far bigger effect than their good deeds on their reputation.
Err … right ….
Naomi - the 'humour' doesn't distract from the fact that you are still not defending your original view.

I wonder why not ..
Basically,Should Boris retire because of this mess up. In my opinion, No. It's up to the party and if they think that overall he has been a good leader they may keep himi n And I hope they do. Unfortunately though the digging up dirt continues and the media will get great pleasure in seeing it does.
AH, no humour - and nothing that needs defending. I told you, your world isn’t mine. People in my world are allowed to make mistakes. My opinion stands.
