The internal machinations of the Labour Party can be quite amusing, but in the great scheme of things do not matter a jot to you or me.
We are led to believe it is a great crisis by the 24 hour News programmes with time to fill, but it isn't.
The story so far...
1997: Blair and Brown make a Gentlemans agreement that Blair would be PM and Brown would follow him.
2007: Blair finally goes but the accession is not a smooth one. Labour MPs would have favoured a vote with other candidates, but no one was brave enough to come forward.
2007: Brown tries to placate the Blairites by giving several of them good jobs in the cabinet.
2009: Blears, Smith and Purnell, prominent Blairites are exposed as making dodgy expenses claims. With an election days away, Brown is reluctant to sack half his cabinet and waits. Knowing they are for the chop, in a final act of treatry, they resign en mass hoping to trigger his removal. For the moment that seems to have failed.
All good fun but none of it really matters to you or I.
