Where are the chattering classes ?

Odd that we dont seem to get posts from SP. Gromit and Jake.
Is it that the civil service, and hence the chatering classes, now have to do some work?

Yes, SP has certainly been active (with a vengeance!) recently:

AB started to feel samey and one of my new years resolutions was not to waste as much time on it. There were also a lot of new posters, so it seemed right to give them a chance
Also, I find the Coalition Government a bit of a joke so I generally agree with the criticism of it. In the past, if the last Government were being criticised and I thought unfairly, I would defend it. With this lot, I would find it hard to raise the energy to pyt a case for them.
And I have always worked in the private sector and still do. I have never been a civil or public servant. Saying that, times are harder and cannot justify wasting my firms time as much as I used to do.

jake the peg claims to be male - not to be confused with jack the hat, who doesn't. I think he's got some sort of scientific job, which doesn't sound like the civil service to me. sp1814 isn't a civil servant either, and Gromit runs a major tea-cosy importing business.
Apart from that, I suppose the OP is correct in every detail.
